The US business universe, by state and industry

Every US business the Census Bureau can count, broken down the three ways that matter for targeting: state, industry, and size. This is the map — it says how many businesses exist where and how big they are. It contains no names and no contacts; those come from the licensing, registry and POI sources, which are annotated per industry below.

Filter

States — employer establishments vs nonemployers

employer establishments    nonemployers (no paid employees)

Nonemployers are the majority almost everywhere, and they are the segment most licensing and registry data covers — a licensed electrician with no staff is a nonemployer, a business, and a lead.

Industry — national

State × industry matrix

Businesses per state per industry — employer establishments plus nonemployers, so cells are the full universe, not payroll firms. Shows the 16 largest of 20 industries; hover any cell for its exact count.

Size mix — establishments by employee count

driven by the Show size mix for filter above — pick a state, or all states

Size is the filter that changes what a lead is worth: a 1–4 employee establishment is a single decision-maker you can reach, while a 1,000+ site is a procurement process. CBP publishes this for employers only — nonemployers are by definition at the bottom of the range.

"Rows we hold" is a rough attribution by filename from the corpus manifest — treat it as directional only. True per-state attribution needs the normalization pass, which does not exist yet.
